Potty Training – COMPLETE!! (For kiddo #1, anyway…)

Potty Training has certainly been a long road in this house.  It started with little baby potties and an excited little guy.  LONG story shorter, we’ve tried potties, trainers, pull-ups, underwear, different seats, bribery, stickers and lots of praise… We seemed to go from success to diapers over and over.  And in the midst, there was a lot of screaming and crying.  Thankfully, most of it wasn’t me.  😉

Right away, I want to tell you about one of the best kid-related investments we have made in our home… The Mayfair Next Step Built In Potty Seats.  We installed one in our powder room, downstairs, and in the kids’ bathroom upstairs.  Our son is 3 1/2 and can get the seat set up himself and climb on without a step.  It’s easy to remove if/when no longer needed or to clean.  AND… there is no more fear-of-falling-in nonsense relating to using our potties.  We LOVE them!!!

This time around, I told my husband that, since he had a three day weekend, we should knock it out in three days like I had read and heard about.  I figured that if we started on Sunday and he worked at home that Monday, by Tuesday I should be less overwhelmed and by Wednesday we should be pretty well done.  And… it pretty much worked.

On day one, we set a timer for every 20 minutes and took him to the potty every time it went off, setting the timer for 3 minutes on the seat.  I started as soon as he started stirring in bed on that morning, and sat his sleepy self on the potty seat right away.  So… the day started with success.  It was a challenge.  I was very glad that my husband was participating in the proccess!  We only had one accident, I think… and that happened when he went to play outside.  I think it was the temperature change.  He slept in a diaper for nap and at night and wet it as expected.

On day two, we set the timer for 20 minutes still and continued just like day one.  If he went, we would set the timer for 30 minutes instead.  If he hadn’t peed in a while, I would set the timer for potty time for 5 minutes instead of three to wait it out… and the breaks dropped to 15 minutes.  We had another outside accident and a hide-behind-the-couch-to-poop incident.  Such is life.

By day three, he stopped having accidents, but he also wasn’t initiating going, so we were sort of home-bound until Day 4, when we finally ran a few errands.  No accidents!  It was awesome!  He was holding it for 1 hour plus spurts!  Whoohoo!  He had also filled his potty train chart!

This resulted in a few errands to find the perfect big potty surprise.  He ended up choosing a Rescue Bots Optimus Prime Rescue Trailer.

By day 5, he was asking to wear underwear during naps, which I said “no” to, and was super proud of his accomplishments.  AND… he was finally initiating.

This weekend, he came up to me and said “Momma, I think I’d like to go Potty now!” and then sighed and said, “Phew, that was close,” when we got there.  He’s got it!!!

Tomorrow, we go on a real, live, play date!  And by golly, I’m so excited about it!  Wish us luck!
